The start of a new school year brings excitement, change, and sometimes a bit of chaos, especially for families with children in special education. But with some early prep and thoughtful organization, the transition can be a lot smoother. Here’s a detailed checklist designed to support emotional readiness, strengthen advocacy, and set up students for success from day one.
Organize the Essentials: IEP & Key Documents
Before the first bell rings:
Review your child's IEP to ensure goals and accommodations match their current needs.
Prepare an IEP binder that includes evaluations, communication logs, and medical information if needed.
Create a “Get to Know Me” sheet to help teachers understand your child’s strengths, challenges, and preferred supports.
Emotional Readiness Matters
Helping your child feel confident and calm:
Talk through changes like new classrooms, teachers, or friends.
Schedule a school walk-through or meet-up with the teacher to ease transitions.
Begin practicing morning routines and transportation habits a couple of weeks in advance.
Supply Check: Beyond the Basics
Stock up:
Buy core supplies, but don’t forget sensory tools, or comfort items.
Build a homework station at home that includes calming elements and practical materials.
Set up a backpack station to make mornings less chaotic.
Communication & Scheduling
Stay connected and proactive:
Plan a pre-year chat with your child’s teacher and IEP team.
Confirm supports are in place.
Keep a communication log to track contact with school staff.
Communicate with teachers, the Special Education department staff, and the appropriate administrators if there is a problem. If an issue is not addressed, they will not know that there is a problem that needs to be resolved.
Goal Setting & Advocacy Tips
Empower your child:
Set personal and academic goals with your child to build confidence.
Attend Back-to-School Night and introduce yourself as an engaged advocate.
Speak up early if accommodations or services need revisiting.
