As a former special education teacher, I’ve learned that the beginning of the school year isn’t just about lesson plans and classroom décor. It’s also about relationships and no relationship is more important than the one between teacher and parent.
If you’re reading this, you’re likely a parent of a child with an IEP, a 504 plan, or a parent of a child with unique learning needs. You’ve advocated, researched, worried, and hoped. You’ve filled out forms, attended meetings, and maybe even cried behind the wheel after morning drop-off. Having been in the classroom, I recognize your challenges.
Your Child’s Teacher Has Read the IEP, But They Want to Know Your Child
An IEP gives a teacher goals, accommodations, and services. But it doesn’t tell what makes your child laugh, what calms them when they’re overwhelmed, or what they love to do in their spare time.
So please, share with your child’s teacher(s):
What motivates your child?
What triggers anxiety or frustration?
What routines or tools work well at home?
Your insights help a teacher instruct more effectively and more compassionately.
Communication Is Key
Communication with a teacher should be proactive and respectful. That means parents should communicate when there’s a concern or an issue that needs to be addressed. You should also reach out for updates, questions, and celebrations. You and the teacher are a team. Like any good team, there should be trust and transparency.
Teachers Are Learning Too
Teachers don’t have all the answers, and sometimes they have questions. Teachers seek out new strategies, tools, and training to better support their students. They reflect on what’s working and what needs adjusting. Teachers also collaborate with specialists, families, and colleagues to grow. Your child deserves the best, and teachers are committed to giving it.
Thank You for Trusting Teachers
I can only imagine how much courage it takes to hand your child over to someone new. I can only imagine the weight of your hopes and fears. In working with your child’s teacher, you help create a year filled with growth, connection, and possibility.
