Nationwide Inclusive Holiday Programs

Holidays lights and Christmas tree
Holidays lights and Christmas tree

Across the U.S., many communities host sensory-friendly and inclusive holiday events designed for children and families with special needs. These range from Caring Santa photo sessions to adapted theater performances, museum nights, and accessible light displays. These events not only create joyful holiday memories but also foster belonging and inclusion for all.

Caring Santa / Santa Cares Day (National Program)

  • Held at malls across the country.

  • Provides quiet, sensory-friendly visits with Santa. Lights and music are softened, appointments reduce wait times, and staff are trained to support children with autism or sensory sensitivities.

Inclusive Theater & Movie Screenings

  • AMC Sensory Friendly Films partnered with the Autism Society to offer a sensory friendly experience with turned up lights and turned down sound.

  • Many regional theaters host ASL-interpreted, open captioned and sensory-friendly performances of holiday classics.

Zoo Lights & Holiday Parks

  • Zoos nationwide schedule sensory-friendly nights with reduced crowds, softer music, and quiet zones.

  • Moody Gardens in Galveston, Texas offers low level sounds and no flashing lights for their Holiday Light Trail. Many holiday experiences throughout the country offer the same or similar.

Children’s Museums & Inclusive Nights

  • Many museums host “Museum My Way” or sensory-friendly evenings with holiday crafts, quiet rooms, and accessible exhibits.

Tips for Families

  • Search “sensory-friendly” + your city to find local adaptations of national programs.

  • Book early - many inclusive events require advance registration.

  • Bring comfort items (headphones, fidgets, snacks) to help children regulate.

  • Check accessibility details (wheelchair access, parking, restrooms, quiet spaces) before attending.
